Around the world in 90 minutes with Year 7

P1010615 250px One hundred and eighty year 7 students at Dane Court Grammar school invited their Parents and teachers to sample a vast array of dishes from around the world. The annual International Food Evening is now in its 21^st year and each year the food seems to get more and more exotic. The students selected their countries and practised their dishes in Food Technology lessons, working together in groups. They made displays and leaflets which contained information about life, food and culture in the countries they had chosen. This project is cross curricular and the students were given the challenge of using food to educate the visitors.
The event was supported by local businesses.

Top award for a top team

MO1L4486 250px Pictured is Dane Court Grammar School PE Department who have deservedly been awarded Thanet Sports Awards Secondary School PE Department of the Year.

Head of Department Ian Wallace said, “I would like to think the award is in recognition for the breadth of opportunity we offer our students and the significant success they have as a result. I would like to thank my department colleagues for their enthusiasm, commitment, and professionalism as well as the school staff for their support in all we do and of course our wonderful students who engage so readily in all that we offer’’.

“The past 12 months have seen a continuation of Dane Court's philosophy of instilling technique, understanding and a sense of fun into all that is offered on the curriculum, and we thank the Thanet Sports Awards team for their acknowledgement of this. The Department has maintained its high level of extra-curricular involvement across a large range of sports with increasing success at District, County and National level, thereby ensuring Dane Court's name is well respected on a wider stage.”

Year 10 student Catherine Banks said “I think PE at Dane Court is good as there is a variety of different sports to try out and learn during PE lessons and clubs outside of school. There are also lots of opportunities to play sports for the school and I enjoy taking part in competitions with the support from the department.”
Blake Leahy, also in year 10, appreciates the time and effort the PE department put into arranging fixtures and transporting the Dane Court teams. He was particularly proud to have been a part of the boys rugby team which have reached the finals of the last two of the Kent Cup contests.

Table Tennis - Kent Schools Team Tournament

This year Dane Court entered four teams with both boys and girls representing the school at Under 13 and Under 16 age groups and although not as successful as last year when both boys teams took bronze medals along with the gold for the Under 16 girls all the teams this year performed well with some of the younger and more inexperienced players showing promise for the future.
None of the Under 13 girls team had ever played tournament Table Tennis before and in a three team event they finished second to collect silver medals and the youngest player Amy Wright deserves special mention for her excellent performance alongside Kirsten Hutchison, Kathleen Croke and Joanna Hoare who all gained wins during the event to help the team finish in the runners up position.
Pride of place however, once again, should go to the Under 16 girls who for the third year in a row became County Champions losing only one game in the competition. In the group stage they completed two 8 -0 wins and then beat the Highworth A team 7 -1 in the final to qualify for the South East Zonal event in January. All 4 girls, Catherine Banks, Tayla Bayley, Annabel Cole and Angel Foster continue to improve and the school is looking forward to seeing how they perform when the challenges become tougher in the new year.
The Under 13 boys led by Louis Lines did well to win both their group games but their Quarter Final opponents Herne Bay, the eventual winners, just proved too strong as Dane Court were narrowly defeated. The the four boys gave their all and learnt a lot so well done Louis, Jayson Morley-Stone, Josh Relph and Nik Krzeslowski. Both Nik and Jayson took turns playing up an age group as the Under 16 Boys team were a player short and they performed creditably to help their team-mates, Adrian Regnouf-Dardennes, Will Barker and Pasan Siriwardana finish second in their group with one win and one loss which meant they did not qualify for the knock-out stage.
Only one of the players is at present in Year 11 so all of the others will be able to compete again next year and with continued commitment, more game experience and improved technique the expectation is that they will bring more success to Table Tennis at Dane Court.
