DofE award presentation 2023

We had the pleasure of presenting Silver Award certificates and badges to our DofE participants at their award presentation evening on Wednesday 29th March 2023. We were very grateful to have our Chair of Governors, Dave Roberts, CBE in attendance to present the awards and we also welcomed Edward Gaskin, the DofE Operations Officer for Kent who gave a heartening brief on the DofE award. Additional congratulations to the six participants out of 25, Febin D’Silva, Eloise Evans, Jacob Hyland, Joseph Sykes, Bethany Tebbutt-Ford and Ryan Vincent.
who also completed their Bronze award and who received their Bronze certificates.

In Summer 2021, 25 students were enrolled to participate in the Duke of Edinburgh Silver Award programme. This included six students who were part way through a Bronze award program which they started through outside organisations.

They all undertook a combination of 3, 6 and 12 months to complete their Volunteering, Skills and Physical sections of the Award. This required regular weekly commitment to a chosen activity- For Skills, many chose cooking or singing or BSL or playing a new instrument; for the Physical section running, climbing or attending a gym was chosen and Volunteering involved a variety of house captain activities at school or running a subject support club, helping at scouts or working in a charity shop to mention a few.
They all undertook training in campcraft, map reading, meal planning, route planning and first aid over a number of months after school. In May 2022, they took part in a practice expedition in the Reculver, Chislet, Minster area and this was followed only two weeks later with the qualifying expedition in the Eastry area.
They worked well as teams, encouraging and helping each other and managed to keep their spirits up despite some challenging weather conditions especially on the assessed expedition where the amount of rainfall made hiking across muddy fields almost impossible.
Their morale and attitude stayed positive throughout the three days and it was a pleasure to see them progress.
Achieving a Duke of Edinburgh Award will give skills, confidence and an edge over others when applying for college, university or a job. Beyond academic achievements, universities and employers want to see evidence of so called ‘soft skills’ such as communication, commitment, leadership and teamwork that they have developed through extra-curricular activities. The DofE Award is a fantastic way to demonstrate and evidence these skills in practice.
I am certain that our students have made a difference to other people’s lives and to our community. They have made new friends and have memories to last them a lifetime.

Dane Court Grammar School is a mixed selective secondary school, set on a spacious site in Broadstairs in the heart of Thanet. The school is a friendly and inspiring place in which our students learn and thrive.

Open Day Schedule - Wednesday 18 October 2023

Morning Session

For those attending St Peter-in-Thanet CofE Junior School and schools in Ramsgate
The doors will open at 9:15am and prospectuses will be available.
The Headteacher, Mr Jones, will give an introduction to the school, starting at 9:30am, and this will be followed by a guided tour of the school until 10.30am.

Midday Session

For those attending Bromstone, Haddon Dene, St George’s, St Joseph's and schools in Margate
Doors will open at 11:45am and prospectuses will be available.
The Headteacher, Mr Jones, will give an introduction to the school, starting at 12:00pm, and this will be followed by a guided tour of the school until 1:00pm.

Afternoon Session

For those attending Upton School and schools in Westgate and Birchington
Doors will open at 2:20pm and prospectuses will be available.
There will be a tour of the school, starting at 2:30pm. The Headteacher, Mr Jones, will give an introduction to the school, starting at 3:15pm and finishing at 3.35pm.

Evening Session 1

For those attending any school.
Doors will open and guided tours begin at 5:30pm. Prospectuses will be available.
The Headteacher, Mr Jones, will give an introduction to the school, starting at 6:30pm and finishing at 6:45pm.

Evening Session 2

For those attending any school.
Doors will open and guided tours begin at 6:45pm. Prospectuses will be available.
The Headteacher, Mr Jones, will give an introduction to the school, starting at 7:45pm and finishing at 8:00pm.

Japanese Cooking Lessons 2024

The Year 13 CP students involved themselves in a lesson of Japanese cooking this term. The students made Soba noodles and Chicken Noodle Soup with great help and assistance by Sensei Myers. The experience was enjoyed by all students. All students said they would definitely like to try it again and it will be a university food for the future, due to how easy it is to make at home.

When asked for their opinions on the experience, students shared positive feedback such as "it was nice to explore a different culture," "I found it very culturally enriching," and "It was great fun." Regarding their thoughts on the food they prepared, the general consensus was very positive, with comments like "I ate a lot!!," "it was sooooooo scrummy!" and "The food was very nice, and I will be trying to make it at home."
As a whole the experience was very enjoyable, not only to experience the culture and food of Japan but also to take a break from the rigorous studies in the school’s sixth-form.

What is the CMK Connect Programme?

The CMK Connect Programme is an opportunity for you to get active, take time for self care, build new connections, learn new skills, develop positive habits to build confidence and improve your overall wellbeing.

Delivered in partnership with organisations across Thanet, the programme offers young people aged 13-17 years the opportunity to take part in various FREE or low cost activities linked to your interests or to try something new, and collect points as you go using your CMK Connect Card.

These points can then be exchanged for rewards through CMK, a community interest company dedicated to supporting people to improve their wellbeing and live happier, healthier lives.

English Tea and Topic - additional support for Year 11 parents

Please find below the audio file for the English Tea and Topic session - which happened last Thursday 18th January. Parents had the opportunity to listen to specific revision insight from Ms Underwood - our Head of English - and to ask any individual questions that they felt would be useful to support their students across both Language and Literature examinations. As with the prior Science session, we wanted to thank all the parents who gave up their time and invite you to listen and catch up on what was discussed if you weren't able to make it. The Maths session link will be up shortly, and there are two events happening after school (Parent Power - 31.01.24 and Year 11 Information Evening - 22.02.24) designed to further support parents to guide their young people to exam success.
