Geography Excellence National Award

MO1L8080 250px A Dane Court student studying Geography as part of her International Baccalaureate Diploma has been recognised for the exceptionally high standard of her GCSE studies in the same subject over the last two years.
The Awards for Excellence in Geographical Learning are presented annually by the Royal Geographical Society (RGS) to the students who have achieved the highest marks nationally in the geography examinations.

Japanese books in the library

The Library is delighted to have a donation of new Japanese books on display. There is a wide selection of different books from novels to essays, Manga, books to help you learn Japanese, children’s textbooks and cookery books. The novels include Never Let Me Go by 2017 Nobel Prize in Literature winner Kazuo Ishiguro, Empire of the Sun by Jo Ballard, Sputnik Sweetheart by Haruki Murakami and The Tale of Genji by Lady Murasaki. There will be a Japanese shelf in the library near the other foreign language titles. Students with even the slightest inerest in Japanese culture, literature or learning the language are encouraged to come and take a look.

DCGS Chatter 1 250px Our very own school newspaper comes online this month. Students at Dane Court are excited to put their first newspaper into print and are launching the DCGS Chatter. Mainly staffed by students from Year 7, with input from Years 8 and 10, the newspaper has seen a flurry of activity and a great deal of excitement at the team headquarters in the school library. DCGS Chatter gives the students an opportunity to share their school news, information about their community, brag about their successes, impress you with their knowledge and skills, and report on student opinion. Not to mention devising competitions which will give you all a chance to win!

At one of the busiest times of the year for the students in Year 7, and capitalising on their medieval project and banquet preparation, the first DCGS Chatter edition focuses on the medieval times and includes a banquet feature, fashion details and plenty of student humour plus competitions with awesome prizes to be won! So, jump right in and take a look at what they have achieved, and if you want your voice to be heard, come and join the buzz of the Chatter team in the library on Wednesday and Thursday lunchtimes.

Orchestra Day

IMG 1373 250px On 23 March 2018, we welcomed 120 musicians from neighbouring Primary Schools to perform as part of an Orchestra here at Dane Court. Our bigger vision in music here at Dane Court is to see the growth of community music and bringing musicians together from different schools to play as one.

As part of this free experience, students experienced a workshop exploring composition and playing as an ensemble as well as learning some classical pieces which were performed on the day.

34 Dane Court students worked as mentors during the day, helping younger students with their day at secondary school as well as supporting them with their performing and playing.
During the Orchestra Day, all students got to perform their own composition as well as three classical pieces of music, including adaptations from The New World Symphony by Dvorak and Waltz of The Flowers by Tchaikovsky.
Learning to perform as part of an ensemble is a fantastic skill and really important to build from the beginner years of learning an instrument.
Dane Court Music Department are working with Kent Music to explore bringing more schools together for other ensembles in the near future, watch this space!
Following the success of the day, in May 2018 a new ensemble will be offered to students of Thanet aged 8-13 here at Dane Court on a Wednesday night, 4:00pm-6:00pm.

TableTennis17 18 250px The year 2017-2018 has been a record breaking year for table tennis at Dane Court Grammar School and it is difficult to believe that any other school in the country has enjoyed the same level of success across both genders and within all four Year 7 to 11 age ranges.
