Most of our Year 13 DofE participants are in the final juncture of their Silver DofE award chasing up their assessor reports for their Volunteering, Physical and Skills activities which they have been pursuing over the past 12 months. Congratulations to the six participants out of 25, who have also completed their Bronze award in Summer 2022 and who will be receiving their award in March 2023 at our presentation evening (date to be confirmed). They are Febin D’Silva, Eloise Evans, Jacob Hyland, Joseph Sykes, Bethany Tebbutt-Ford and Ryan Vincent.
Year 12
A whopping 37 year 12 students have now been enrolled on the Silver Duke of Edinburgh award program for 2022/2023 and we wish them well as they begin their quest to search for and embark upon their chosen Volunteering, Physical and Skills activities. They have all been set up in a Google classroom where all of their resources are posted including their training program. Regular weekly training begins in November and will continue until the practice and qualifying expeditions in the summer term. All students MUST ensure to get their 12-month sections started ASAP so that they are finished by this time next year and it does not interfere with IB mocks or other pressing deadlines.

Year 7 and 8 students took part in a Jazz workshop led by a professional musician from Deal Music and Arts Education on Wednesday the 24th May. They learnt to play a brilliant funk piece called Pass the Peas by James Brown (based on a D minor pentatonic scale), and had a lot of fun in the process. Students pushed themselves outside their comfort zones with many trying improvisation for the first time, and some playing in front of peers for the first time. Very well done to all involved, but in particular well done to Aurora, Winter, Aaron, D'Angelo, Kaiya and Prudence for being prepared to have a go at a solo! The Music Department is very proud of how well they collaborated during the workshop; have a listen to the outcome below.

DCGS Chatter members have worked incredibly hard on creating this edition of the school newspaper for you, bringing you a variety of articles from members of the team across the school community in our tribute edition to Queen Elizabeth.
We have, as always, so many fangtastic articles within this edition. We hope you have as much fun reading it, as we have had putting this edition together for you. We have had reporters focusing on the various events that have been held across the school, a spooky short story & our competition poem winners, news on the amazing amount raised at the book fair and we have also have lots of interesting articles on Queen Elizabeth, including her IB learner profile and King Charles.
If anyone would like to join the Chatter team, we meet in the library twice a week at lunchtime, find out more details by emailing Mrs Cronin, Mrs Finlay, Mrs Roger or asking your mentor or head of year when we return. All students from across the school & staff are very welcome, if you aren't very good at writing, we always need a hand at new ideas editing, page design or you could create some art!

Bursting with many fantastic articles to read from students across the school, such as new staff interviews, the amazing fundraising events happening around the school & the year 8’s fantastic Christmas cakes! Our fantastic students have also been reporting on what they have been doing outside of school, reviewing shows, books & how to make delicious festive bakes.
Also in this edition there are details of what is happening in the library, Armistice Day celebrations and lots of helpful suggestions to survive the festive season along with a chance to win £15. Not forgetting our creative writing students and their fantastic stories & poems, featured in Chatter to enjoy with a warm hot chocolate or festive treat!!

We have reports on the ever popular Valentines Bistro, Year 7’s life saving training and some tasty Japanese cooking. There is sporting news from the many successes of students & staff including the Under 16’s Girls Kent Cup Final win!
Along with an update on the fundraising that has happened across the past couple of terms. We hope you enjoy reading the school's World Book Day story created by some very talented students and the many reviews from the students on theatre performances.

On Monday 16 January, some of our year 8, 9 and 12 students who are studying Spanish assembled in the theatre to watch the Onatti Theatre Company perform a wonderfully funny play, entitled 'Mi Personalidad (My personality)'. The play was delivered entirely in Spanish by two professional Spanish actors. The students absolutely loved it and were talking in Spanish afterwards. When they were first told about the play, they were a little apprehensive about how much they would be able to understand so it was brilliant to see them engaged and participating during the performance. The play is all about identity. It’s Fernando’s first day at University and he is trying to make friends, however, it doesn’t go well at all, and so, he tries out different personalities with the help of a mysterious acquaintance… Here’s what some of our students said: “We were happily surprised to see how engaging the show was. There was a good balance of educational and entertaining aspects.” - Year 12 ab initio students. “It was so entertaining and really easy to understand and follow.” - Year 9 student. “It was very funny, the comedy was perfect and the props were really good”. - Year 9 student. We are so glad that students enjoyed the experience and we look forward to welcoming the Onatti Theatre Group back on the 9th of February when they will be performing a French play ‘Parlez-vous français?’ for some of our year 7 students.

On Friday 10 February 2023, Coastal Academies Trust (CAT) hosted its first groundbreaking conference at Dane Court Grammar School, bringing together over 400 delegates from its five member schools. David Didau - renowned education expert, teacher, author and self-professed provocateur – captivated the audience with his key note speech, challenging myths and misconceptions, and promoting innovation in teaching.
Twenty five speakers from Trust schools and external organisations delivered inspiring presentations on topics ranging from pedagogy to mental health. The conference served as an invaluable opportunity for educators to expand their networks and learn from the experiences of their peers, with delegates and speakers engaging in lively discussions, exchanging ideas and sharing best practice.
This event showcased the commitment of Coastal Academies Trust to excellence in education, as it continues to create a supportive and progressive environment for its member schools. With a focus on fostering collaboration and sharing expertise, the success of this conference highlights the Trust's dedication to nurturing the next generation of academic achievers in Thanet. Plans are already underway for next year’s event.
