Table tennis teams take gold

ttennis jun12 300pxRepresenting Thanet at the Kent Schools Games Table Tennis Finals at the University of Kent, Dane Court came away with a double gold medal success as both the Under 15 Boys and Girls teams were crowned County champions.

For the Under 15 Boys this was their second success in a row as they won this biennial event two years ago as Under 13's and once again they went through the whole competition unbeaten. In the group stage both Maidstone and Shepway were defeated 8-0 with all four players, James Barker, Harry Walton, Kallum Marlow and James Wright winning both their matches. In the Semi- Final a decent Medway side from the Howard school proved worthy opponents but were still no real match for the combined strength of the Dane Court boys as the 7-1 score proved although the Thanet number one James Barker was narrowly defeated in a high quality match against Medway's top player. Then the final against Sittingbourne saw a repeat 7-1 victory with James Wright losing one of his two matches but by then victory had been assured and to win a county wide competition once again in such dominating style shows what a really strong side Dane Court has. Special mention to Harry Walton who in all his many Kent Schools Games appearances for Dane Court has never been beaten while Kallum Marlow who replaced George Walton in the team this year did a great job by also winning all his games as the team's number three player.

The Under 15 Girls team had a tougher fight to achieve their success but led by the experienced and highly talented Yumeng Li they managed to win both their group games against Maidstone and Ashford and then had to play Ashford again in the Final. Two comfortable victories for Yumeng against the top two Ashford players helped the team edge in front and then all the other three younger Year 9 girls, Emily Young, Sumaiyah Choudhury and Jessica Combe played superbly against determined opponents to win a game each to make the final score 5-3 to Dane Court.

Both teams proudly mounted the winners' podium to receive their gold medals from Olympic swimmer Chris Cook.

The other Dane Court team appearing in the Finals were the Under 13 Girls team and they did Thanet proud by achieving a win [(against Sittingbourne), a draw (against Ashford B) and two defeats to the strong Maidstone and Ashford A girls sides which meant they finished fourth in the group. None of the girls in this team have played much competitive Table Tennis so they did really well to reach the Finals and perform so courageously and all four of them, Shania Stygall, Megan Griffiths, Alice Nolan Bryant and Lauren Hayes, have the potential to become top players.
