Two students from Dane Court Grammar School entered a competition organised by the David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation. The competition aims to encourage young people from around the world to express their concern for the environment and, in particular, the endangered species with whom we share our fragile planet through art and poetry. This year children were invite to submit art work or poetry on the theme ‘It’s Our World’ and required schools or individuals to think about the impact that human activity is having on our planet and the many species of endangered animals. The competition, this year, was generously sponsored by Marks and Spencer

Over 2500 entries were received from around the world in a variety of age groups from 4 to 16. Dane Court student Lily Anderson (14) from Broadstairs submitted a really creative piece featuring a silhouette of the world with endangered animals highlighted on various continents. Lily was delighted to discover that she had won her age group (14 year olds category) outright and was global runner up in the overall competition. Lily is now looking forward to attending an award ceremony which will take place at the Natural History Museum on Thursday 13 March were she will meet the eminent wild life artist David Shepherd CBE and have the opportunity to see her work on display at the museum.

 Karina Cooppen (14) from Birchington entered a piece that examined the plight of monkeys. Her work will form part of an exhibition of around 350 pieces of work on show at the Museum from the 13 March.

Lily said "I entered the competition after being inspired by one of my teachers, Mr White, he helped me to see wildlife in a different light and I wanted to be involved with the David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation. I have a great interest in our world and its wildlife and wanted to base my art on this. I chose to put my painting in silhouette to represent how I visualise our world and highlight some of the endangered species as they fight for survival. I was really thrilled to learn that I had won my age group and I am really looking forward to the awards ceremony that will be taking place at the Natural History Museum"
