On 12 July 2011 Thanet School Sport Partnership held its annual gathering at the Margate Winter Gardens to celebrate all aspects of sport but with particular emphasis on participation in schools. Dane Court teachers Kim Van Hinsbergh and Derek Towe each received awards for their dedication to teaching PE and sport in Thanet.
Kim was highly commended for her contribution to PE and school sport. Her teaching colleagues at Dane Court said of her: "Kim has shown consistent endeavour to develop PE and school sport over a sustained period of time. She is a committed member of the PE learning community who often puts herself forward for roles. She is receptive to change and new ideas and has embraced projects to develop inclusive activities for pupils of all abilities."
Derek Towe received an award for his outstanding contribution to PE and school sport.
In his thirty five years (and counting) at Dane Court, Derek has inspired hundreds of pupils to be actively engaged in sport, with his expertise and unwavering enthusiasm for the subject and he continues to set high standards and encourage all under his tutelage to achieve their potential.
Fellow teachers of PE at Dane Court commented:
"Derek's dedication and commitment to extracurricular sport knows no bounds. He is an avid record keeper and has maintained results books over almost 4 decades (and can comment on every single one).
He is an excellent and most skilful sportsman, and although his heart is on the cricket field, he can play any game and execute any skill with precision, accuracy and control (which can be very annoying).
Derek is, in the words of those he has taught over the years, a "legend" and thoroughly deserving of an award to acknowledge all that he has given to sport throughout his lifetime."
